Intern Spotlight:

Samir Mujtaba - Design Associate I - Architecture

Beginning work as a full-time employee can be a new experience that not many know how to come prepared to. Many students in my graduating class did not know what to expect, and how to prepare themselves for working full-time. Luckily for me, I knew what to expect and how to properly prepare myself thanks to the Haskell Internship Program. Haskell ensures that each
individual in the internship program receives real work experiences and learn skills to advance your professional development.

My first internship with Haskell was in the summer of 2018 while I was in High School. From there I had been exposed to Haskell and its core values, and to the talented architects and engineers that inspired me to pursue this career. I returned to Haskell in the summer of 2021 to join the Private Facilities Architecture team. This internship allowed me to learn the fundamental skills to becoming a successful architect and team member at Haskell. I returned to the Private Facilities Architecture team the following year and continued to expand upon my skillset and gained new responsibilities. For my third Summer at Haskell, I decided to join the Public Facilities Architecture team, to take advantage of the many markets and opportunities that Haskell offers. While I was learning skills to develop my Architectural career, the University Relations team was ensuring that I was also learning the proper skills to develop as a professional.

Once I joined Haskell as a full-time team member, it was an easy transition. I had an early understanding of my responsibilities and what was expected of me thanks to the internship program. Haskell truly values the aspect of being a team, so when I returned to work full-time it was like being reunited with my team and friends, I made each summer. Each day has been a different experience that I am well equipped for thanks to the exposure that Haskell provides. I am grateful for the opportunities I had to intern at Haskell early on in my career and I look forward to continuing my growth with my team and Haskell.

Tips for running effective meetings!

Create a meeting agenda.

Every efficient meeting starts with a meeting agenda! Agendas help you plan and present the scope, outline, and discussion of you meeting.

Choose the right length to meet.

Use your meeting agenda to determine how long your meeting should last. Keep in mind that if your meetings go on too long, you risk losing your audience’s attention. However, you don’t want to rush through meetings either, or your attendees might not fully understand or retain the information. Many effective meetings only last for 15 to 20 minutes, however, your meeting may need to run longer if you are brainstorming or making important decisions!

Invite the right people.

When meetings are overcrowded, they can become counterproductive and impractical. With too many people offering their opinions or asking questions, your meeting can quickly move off- topic. On the other hand, you don’t want to waste your colleagues’ precious time when they could be working on something else. To run a productive meeting, consider who will benefit from your meeting and avoid inviting anyone who isn’t directly affected by your meeting topic.

Take meeting minutes.

Taking effective meeting minutes is essential. Attendees can reference their meeting minutes to refresh their memory on what was discussed. Meeting minutes also benefit those who were unable to attend. If you’re running a meeting, assign a team member to take minutes for you!

Leave time for questions.

If someone in your meeting has a question, chances are that someone else in the meeting was wondering the same thing. Running an effective meeting means that your attendees have a clear understanding of what was discussed. Allot time for questions in your meeting so that any outstanding questions are answered.

Provide next steps.

If you share a lot of information in a meeting, your attendees may wonder what to do with it all. Provide clear next steps during the meeting so your attendees are all on the same page. Next steps might include due dates, future meetings, and required deliverables.
